Our Story

My teaching journey started in the Dallas Ft. Worth Metro years ago.

During my first years teaching French and Spanish, I relied far too much on the textbook "curriculum". Sparking the love of languages in my students was a challenge, and learning felt rote and uninspired.

The old approaches to learning a second language weren't working, and I could see it every day.

I struggled to help my students capture what inspired my love of languages - hearing the language spoken, using it in simple phrases, and learning about the wonderful French culture - tapping into auditory, visual, and kinesthetic teaching styles to drive new learning home.

A couple of years later, while teaching in Utah, one workshop helped me identify and crystalize what I'd already begun to implement in my classroom - teaching to multiple learning styles while focusing on real communication.

It was then that I began to really learn to put these key principles together with the basic elements of French and Spanish, building and remixing concepts and vocabulary. I forged ways to make practice fun.

This was the genesis of our Authentic Lingo method.

The Foundation: French 1

You’ll explore a typical French village in this level 1 course, learning the basics in vocabulary, grammar and culture at stops all over town!  From food at the market to time and calendars at the office, you’ll experience the language in a way that is both relevant and easy to understand.  Material is introduced in a meaningful context, and these building blocks are coupled with the grammar needed for solid communication.

The Facilitator: French Alphabet Exploration

No foreign language experience is effective without practice.  Verbal practice.  To learn like a kid, students need to hear the language, interact with it and say it (when they are ready).  This is why we created our Alphabet Exploration course on pronunciation.

 

Going hand in hand with the level 1 course, Alphabet Exploration will give students a thorough introduction to the actual sounds of French.  It will help them develop the ear for a new language and develop a beautiful accent.         

The Finesse: French 2

Our French level 2 course continues to build on the foundation of learning in context (for retention and interest) …new adventures abound as students learn to articulate questions and comments, patronize cafés and hotels, and follow directions traveling on a voyage all over France.

 

New practice with verbs and description allows students to communicate with more depth, while verbal practice helps them develop more confidence in conversation.  All in all, level 2 opens the door to a new level of ability – sparking their interest in true fluency.

Frequently Asked Questions.

I've tried the apps and still couldn't speak a sentence, how is this program different?

The AI generated apps have their place, but let's face it, you're a human, and you want to learn to interact with other humans in French.

To eventually be able to speak confidently, you need to HEAR French or Spanish spoken authentically, gain proficiency with a core vocabulary, and PRACTICE speaking .

Our approach offers all of these critical components, including weekly live practice sessions with our lead instructor and suggestions on different fun ways to hear French spoken and interact in French.

I'd love to learn French or Spanish for travel, but I'm busy and don't have big blocks of time to sit down for a course and study.

We've built Authentic Lingo's Level One courses just for people like you.

The video lessons are entirely self-paced, and our course management system tracks precisely where you've stopped in your last session, so you can watch even 5 to 10 minutes at a time (or more, or less) and pick up right where you left off when you have some time to spare.

Most of the videos are between 20 and 25 minutes in length, and the worksheet and vocab lists are downloadable PDFs.

How should I best view the course to maximize my learning experience?

We've crafted the video series to be OPTIMALLY viewed on a computer screen or television.

Our videos work well on most tablet screen sizes, though you'll enjoy your experience much more on a larger screen.

Though technically possible, we do NOT recommend viewing the lesson videos on a phone / mobile screen - you'll struggle to read some of the material on a screen that small.

How quickly do you recommend working through the course?

Most students find that setting a goal of working through a lesson or review lesson per week yields the best results, however, the pace is up to you and your students!

Of course there's no set pace you must follow; some students take longer, some work through the lessons more quickly.

Ideally we'd recommend watching through each lesson video once, then grabbing your vocabulary list and lesson worksheet and working back through the lesson one or more times to really drive home the core components of the lesson. And don't forget the optional live training offered weekly (and recorded).

Would your classes work for my kids in homeschool?

Absolutely.

We're home school / hybrid school parents ourselves, and in no small part designed the program to meet the needs of home schooling / hybrid schooling families.

From a home teacher perspective, our programs are for the most part self contained and require very little prep time for the home-based instructor.

We also commonly hear that parents love going through the lessons with their kids too!

Do you offer private or private group live lessons?

We have limited time for private / private group lessons and typically have several classes going at a time.

We're physically located in the northern part of the DFW metro and do offer live in person group teaching in a limited local area "in the neighborhood".

That said, we've conducted live private and group lessons via digital means all across the country and in several international venues as well.
